Scientist Portraits

Here are three more portraits of very interesting men who had different theories as to what the sun was made out of. They are published with an article written by Pierre Robitaille a professor at Ohio State University, who has concluded through his research that the sun is actually liquid. Herve Faye is the bottom picture then Fr. Angelo Secchi, and at the top Herbert Spencer. I don't think the article can be viewed online yet, but I have read through it partly and it seems to make a lot of sense. I will post a link once I have the chance.

Dungeons and Dragons

Recently I have been working on a few commissions for Dungeon magazine. I'm a little late in posting the last two, the first one I have just finished last month. You can see part of the article on the Dungeons and Dragons website here (Taverngoers) (Djinn's Tent) (Six Fingered Hand) These were a blast to work on, I was given loose parameters and allowed to make most of the artistic decisions myself. Really great projects for someone like me who is trying to make a start professionally illustrating.

Old drawing I just had the chance to finish. Snagged some fresh colored inks @ Hobby Lobby, the place of my employment. 8 quality Winsor Newton colors for $20, every other week we got 40% off coupon plus regular pocket bustin sales.

Thought I'd test out some sepia lines. I like the sepia, it's not as intimidating to draw with as waterproof black.

Got a new piece brewin' up, the ending scene from "Cask of the Amontillado." This is a collaboration instigated by my former classmate Mike Puncekar who is working on the color half of it. My intent was to show a more sorrowful revenge, rather than angry, being exacted on Fortunato. I felt it went with the slowness and contemplated way he was executed. Catacombs were a blast to draw.

I think I will try using more permanent inks in the beginning stages of paintings. I have discovered that after about the 6th or 7th wash paint starts lifting off too easily, and sometime gets texture where I don't want it. Also my paper starts becoming more rough on the surface and the line drawing gets disrupted. Maybe time to try a new paper too.

Beginning a new piece from Edgar Allen Poe's terrifying short story "the Black Cat". The environment was designed after the dilapidated basement in my parents house. This is the climax in the story right before the main character murder's his wife after being driven mad by their demonic pet black cat.

Returned from Illuxcon on Monday, and my mind is still so blown from all the super pro illustration. Thanks again to Patrick and Jeannie Wilshire for organizing everything, and all the judges who made it possible for me to go. Also thanks to Volkan Baga, Jeff Easley, Donato Giancola, Don Maitz, Christopher Moeller, Tom Kuebler, Jordu Schell, and Michael Whelan the artists who donated pieces to pay for the trip. I'm so glad I was able to go this year!! I'm not one for taking photos but I got a few shots of the Paul Lehr collection, gorgeous stuff.

Concepts for Dagon, one of my favorite Lovecraft creatures. When he swims he tucks his arms on to his sides and spreads his webbed hands out like fins. He swims the fastest like a water snake, but he can also swim backwards or vertically like the bizarre oarfish. On land he drags himself around with hims arms extended.

New personal project, inspired by a line from The Everlasting Man by GK Chesterton. "The dark alien woman staring from her high lattice and hearing like the babble of a brook over a stoney street, the singing of little St Hugh" He was referring to the Medieval child martyr little Hugh , and the alien woman would've been a witch. Did a few character studies from Brian Froud and Alan Lee's book Faeries, just to have something to go from.

Here is a piece I made for Return of the Native by Thomas Hardy. In this scene the girl (Eustacia) in blue is dressed up as the Turkish Knight in the Play of St George. She is spying on the man in the foreground to see if he is good husband material. I think there are a lot of things wrong with it so I might be repainting soon.

I have discovered that it is much better to draw teachers during class because I am supposed to be looking at them, so there is no awkward eye contact when somebody realizes you are drawing them and then you feel kind of creepy. I believe Mr. Wang is using "coffee eye" in this depiction.

Thought I would post these portraits I did for a family friend over break. He is a professor at OSU and he is writing arcticles about the sun being liquid. It is much too complicated for me to undertand, but apparantly there are miscalculations tracing back.The few photographs of these old school astrophysicists are copyrighted so I got to do the illustrations. James Jeans is on the left and the other is Sir Arthur Eddington. heres a link to his site.

Been reading Dante's Inferno a very interesting book but a little hard to get through because of the archaic sentence structure. It is Dante and Virgil in the Forest of Suicides, one of the sections in Hell, one of the parts that was really visually memorable to me. These spirits had grown into trees because they cast away their bodies on earth so they are not even allowed the shadow of a body in Hell.

this is an illustration of a Pink Floyd song, done in gouache and watercolor. The concept of the song is that after you die your soul becomes a part of the sun, it doesn't have anything to do with space really.

This is what I see when i listen to the Radiohead song Idioteque. If I make a painting of this idea the people will be dancing on the ice planet. Idioteque is a kind of satirical dance song and I think it has also has some global warming references, but it's the illest song on Kid A.
